Black white dating and marriage has been on the rise since the Supreme Court struck down laws that banned interracial marriage in the United States. Loving vs. Virginia is the case that marked the turning point.
According to Editors, History.com, plaintiffs, Richard and Mildred Loving were a white man and a black woman. They lived in the same town, were longtime friends, fell in love and married. They married in Washington, D.C. where interracial marriage was legal. Returning to their home in Virginia, though, they faced the anti-miscegenation statute.
Miscegenation is defined as any marriage or interbreeding among different races. And the state of Virginia looked upon the Lovings’ marriage as illegal. Five weeks after the couple’s wedding, the local sheriff awakened them from their bed in the early hours of the morning and arrested them.
Editors, History.com states, “Richard and Mildred were indicted on charges of violating Virginia’s anti-miscegenation law, which deemed interracial marriages a felony.”
U.S. Supreme Court
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) helped Richard and Mildred Loving appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote that the Constitution declares that people have the freedom to choose to marry or not marry a person of another race. And that an individual’s decision should not be infringed upon by the state.
The court subsequently ruled that the anti-miscegenation statutes were unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment. This ruling overturned the couple’s felony conviction and in addition struck down laws against interracial marriage in 16 U.S. states, which included Virginia.
Since the court lifted the ban, black white dating and marriage—as with other races—has been on the rise. As with the Richard and Mildred Loving, people of different races do become friends and fall in love. This is more apt to happen now since women are working more and come in contact with men more.
Not so long ago, women stayed home to rear the children while men went to work to support the family. Now people are choosing to date longer and to postpone marriage or to forego marriage altogether.
Many Black women are choosing to get their education and enter into the work force in higher numbers.
Black white dating has increased since the Supreme Court lifted the ban against interracial marriage. Now people are free to be with whomever they choose. And they may choose to be with another race because...
Although there is a shortage of Black men, statistics show that more men date and marry outside of their race than do Black women.
And despite the increasing incident of black white dating and marriage, Black men and Black women tend to date and marry each other.
It will be interesting to see if Black couples will come together more or if they will continue to grow apart from each other, as is the trend.
There are many who encourage the Black couple to remain together where they can build a strong unit. This unit then can cultivate positive self-images, pride, happiness and other core values within the Black family structure .
